What exactly is the TEK30 spec?

To describe it as simply as possible, it’s any bolt that uses a T-30 Torx wrench. What makes this special is that we’re advocating the use of the T-30 interface on bolts of all sizes and using T-30 on machined parts like pedal spindles, crank endcaps, and thru-axles. The goal is to be able to completely outfit a bike so that everything is mounted with one size wrench – levers, wheels, stems, starnuts, pedals, seat posts, etc.

How is this possible?

Bolts use progressively larger wrenches so that larger bolts can hold up to higher torque settings. This is not necessary on a bicycle. Pivot bolts, thru-axles, etc. are larger so they don’t snap under sheer loads, not becuase they need to be tightened at a higher torque setting. There aren’t any bolts on a bicycle that require a torque setting that would exceed the strenght of a T-30 wrench.

Exceptions?

There will be plenty of little setscrews and adjuster bolts that can’t be made with T-30, like pedal traction pins, derailleur adjusters, etc. The TEK30 standard is focused on the mounting hardware which is primarily M5 and 6 and larger.

What About 6mm Allen Bolts?

A T-30 Torx wrench actually fits into the allen head on most M6 bolts so there is a certain amount of TEK30 compatibility which should be fine for low torque applications, but will result in damage to the bolt under high torque.

We’ll start with aftermarket titanium upgrade bolts. At the same time, we will be working to OE carbon steel and stainless bolts that will be available to bikee industry brands and manufacturers in Taiwan, China, Europe, and North America.

Can anyone make TEK30 products?

You bet. It’s encouraged. If a brand has the manufacturing capacity to make TEK30 atermarket or OE hardware or parts, have at it. This is completely open source. We will even be supplying an officail TEK30 COMPATIBLE logo with no licensing fee. Let’s make this happen!
